Cosmetic and medical nose surgery / rhinoplasty

Cosmetic nose surgery or rhinoplasty aims to modify the morphology of the nose so to improve the symmetry of the profile.

The time when all remodeled noses look the same has passed. The result of a rhinoplasty should be natural and adapted to the face as a whole.

In certain cases, it is possible to obtain satisfactory results by non-surgical methods ( medical rhinoplasty with botox or hyaluronic acid injections). Dr Christophe Laveaux will help you make the best choice.

Guidelines for the procedure

The surgeon changes the infrastructure of the nose bone and its cartilage, and can thus erase a bump, reduce the size (portrait and/or profile), correct certain asymmetries or straighten a crooked nose.

In most cases the incisions are hidden inside the nostrils. Sometimes additional incisions are needed to reduce the size of the nostrils or to alter the tip of the nose (wide tip, incorrect angle, asymmetrical etc…).

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. The duration varies between 1 and 2 hours. Hospitalisation is 12 to 24 hours.

Associated treatments
  • an overall improvement in the profile of the face can be offered through chin, cheekbones and/or forehead surgery ;
  • a nasal septum (septoplasty) procedure can be associated in the event of a twisted nose or breathing difficulties ;
  • in general all cosmetic face procedures can be associated, either during the same procedure or at a later time (facelift, eyelid surgery,…).
Postoperative effects

When the surgery is complete, a cast is applied. It is removed after 10 days. Doctor Laveaux does not perform wound packing. Only small, easy-to-remove silicone plates are used during the nasal septum procedures. Small pieces of Paraffin Tulle gauze dressing are inserted into the nostrils for 24 hours.

Pain, if any, is easily relieved by simple analgesics.
Discomfort to breathe through the nose is normal during the first days.
Swelling and bruising around the eyes occurs and will disappear in 1-2 weeks.

The patient may resume a normal social and professional life 10-20 days after the operation. Contact sports can only be resumed after 3 months.

Risk of complications

As with any surgery, a number of complications can occur. But the likelihood of these complications is reduced in the hands of a qualified plastic surgeon and in the presence of a competent anaesthetist.  The patient’s compliance to instructions given by the surgeon is also essential and include :

  • stopping smoking  1 month before and after the procedure (reduction of all risks) ;
  • not taking aspirin for 10 days before and after the procedure (reduced risk of hematoma).

Fortunately, postoperative effects are generally manageable following a rhinoplasty that has been carried out properly, so serious complications are rare.

Rare complications that could occur include, but are not limited to risk of hematoma and infection.

In the event of a complication, appropriate measures will be taken.

In practice, the vast majority of cases take place without any problem and the patients are satisfied with the result.

Health insurance coverage
As this procedure is considered purely for aesthetic purposes, no coverage is provided by health insurance. In some cases, particularly after trauma, partial coverage may be granted.

Nostril reduction

The size of the nostrils can be reduced by Alarplasty. This procedure can be performed alone or in combination with a more global rhinoplasty.

Guidelines for the procedure

Several techniques exist depending on the extent of the desired reduction:

  • The inter-nostril suture technique brings the 2 nostrils closer to each other without any visible scar. This method is possible for small reductions in the size of the nostrils.
  • Techniques with incision allow part of the nostrils to be removed. The scar is more or less extended from the base of the nostril to the external nostril groove.

When the nostril surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, a simple local anaesthetic is sufficient.

Postoperative effects

Postoperative after effects are manageable and painless. The sutures are removed after 5 to 7 days.

In the event of scarring, makeup can be used immediately after removal of the stitches. The scar will most often be very discreet or even unnoticeable after several weeks.
